Firefly Stars

.

(photograph of real fireflies at night from Jim Richardson)

Recently I received a gift. And it delights me to share it with you. A gift of clever humor and a reminder of the quiet glory of Autumn that is just beginning at my corner of the globe. This present was given when my 10 year old son recited this poem to me as part of his homework. Thank you, dear one:

Fireflies in the Garden

~ Robert Frost

Here come real stars to fill the upper skies

And here on earth come emulating flies

That though they never equal stars in size

(And they were never really stars at heart)

Achieve at times a very star-like start,

Only, of course, they can't sustain the part.

Just another reason why Frost is my favorite poet.
